Oklahoma SCS/NRCS Retired Employees
Minutes of Meeting October 15, 2010
Oklahoma SCS/NRCS Retired Employees met at the Hometown Buffet on the NW Expressway in Oklahoma City. Forty-nine people were in attendance.
President Stan Rice called the meeting to order and briefly outlined the agenda for the meeting. He asked that everyone be thinking of a funny story of their SCS/NRCS workdays and John Pewthers would be in charge of that later in the meeting. Everyone enjoyed the buffet meal.
Following the meal, President Rice again called the meeting to order. He asked Bobby Smith to provide the blessing for the meal. He called on Kenneth Blan to introduce his guest, Linda Cook, his youngest daughter. George Moreland introduced his guest, Evelyn Miller.
He then asked Randy Freeland to provide an update on the national organization to which he is the Oklahoma representative: Association of Retired Conservation Service Employees (ARCSE). Randy asked that each retiree in attendance complete a short information sheet as to what they have been doing since retiring from SCS/NRCS. If anyone had not completed the long form in the past, he asked that they complete that form instead of the short form. He uses that information to provide news articles to the national organization for their newsletter. Newsletters are sent to members of the national organization every other month. Dues are $18 per year and he has membership applications if anyone is interested.
Secretary/Treasurer Sandra Hough thanked Dan Runnels for doing an excellent job at the April meeting in her absence. She then read the April 23, 2010, minutes. They were approved as read. The treasurer’s report showed an ending balance of $981.20 after the expenses were deducted for the meeting. Dues collected at the last meeting totaled $200.00. There were 350 meeting notices mailed for this meeting at a total cost of $219.05. Ten notices were returned with incorrect addresses. Eight were remailed with current addresses, one was deceased and one had no forwarding address, Lilian Nordean previously at an Ada address. It was thought she was probably deceased. Sandra read an email she had received from Ed Kephart concerning two surgeries he has had this year. He is currently in physical therapy three days a week. A sign in sheet was routed to record the names of those in attendance.
President Rice read a list of retirees who have passed since our April 2010 meeting. He also said that copies of the agenda were available in the back of the room listing those who have passed. Those we are aware of include: Sham Coppinger, WS Planning Staff @ Claremore, 12/3/08; Tommy Gray, SCT at Walters & Hinton, 5/6/10; Paul Copeland, DC Pauls Valley & Waurika, 5/21/10; Lavada Moffatt, widow of Harold Moffatt, Soil Scientist; 6/4/10; Kenneth Risenhoover, DC @ Poteau, 7/8/10; Widow of Walter Wilson, retired WS inspector @ Davis WO & mother of Tom Wilson, SC, Hobart, 7/12/10; J. President Rice asked that those attending the meeting for the first time to introduce themselves: Duane Crider, DC @ El Reno & David Edmonds, CET @ McAlester AO. Others in attendance were given an opportunity to introduce themselves and their spouses or guests, if in attendance.
Vice-President John Pewthers asked retirees to share funny stories from their careers with SCS/NRCS. Retirees were asked to keep the stories brief. Many volunteered stories to the delight of those in attendance. Everyone was invited to bring some funny stories to future meetings. This will be an on going agenda item at future meetings.
There was no other business to bring before the group and the meeting was adjourned.
The next meeting was scheduled for Friday, April 22, 2011, at the Hometown Buffet on the NW Expressway in Oklahoma City. A notification will be sent approximately 30 days prior to the meeting.
