Oklahoma SCS/NRCS Retired Employees

Minutes of Meeting

April 23, 2010

Oklahoma SCS/NRCS Retired Employees met at the Hometown Buffet on the Northwest Expressway in Oklahoma City.  Thirty-nine people were in attendance.

Stan Rice, President, called the meeting to order and briefly outlined the agenda for the meeting.  He asked that everyone be thinking of a funny story from their SCS/NRCS workdays and John Pewthers would be leading a sharing of those stories later in the meeting.  Stan Rice provided the blessing and everyone enjoyed a buffet meal.

Following the meal Stan Rice again called the meeting together.  He said he had an agenda but forgot his glasses.  Stan asked if any one was attending their first meeting as a new retiree or had not attended a meeting in the past five years.  Joe Schneider, Retired District Conservationist from Miami, introduced himself as a first time attendee.  Stan noted that Sandra Hough was camping in Texas, Fred Fortney was recovering from knee replacement surgery, Randy Freeland was on a cruise and Don Bartolina was involved with Conservation Boot camp (NRCS new employee training) so were absent from the meeting today.  Dan Runnels would be substituting for Sandra in taking minutes for today’s meeting.

Stan discussed that the national organization previously known as the Association of Retired Soil Conservation Service Employees (ARSCSE) and now known as the Association of Retired Conservation Service Employees (ARCSE) was available to all retired employees at a membership dues cost of $18 per year.  They provide a newsletter to members every other month.

Dan Runnels routed and requested that all attendees complete a sign in sheet for a record of the meetings attendance.  Dan Runnels read the October 30, 2009 minutes which were approved as read.  The treasurer’s report showed an ending balance of $1000.25 after the expenses for this meeting were deducted.  Dues collected at the last meeting totaled $180.00.  There were 350 notices sent out for today’s meeting at a total cost of $254.82. Ten notices were returned due to incorrect addresses however four of those were sent again with current addresses.  Dan Runnels provided the names of the six remaining, Ruth White (note on card says she is deceased); Reta L. McVay (now lives in Florida with her daughter);Vivian L. Malloy, Okemah; Margaret Magness, Vinita; Dorothy Karsteter, Stillwater; and Elizabeth A. Hayes, Bartlesville. Sandra asked if anyone knows the status of these individuals please let her know. The treasurer’s report was approved as read.  Stan Rice announced that dues of $10 were due each April and if you had not already paid your dues at the October meeting (or did not remember), see Dan Runnels before they left to pay dues.  Dan Runnels also reported that Nickey J. Lambeth and his wife Doris sent their regards to all. They were unable to attend the meeting due to Doris’s recent health problems.

President Rice asked all members in attendance to provide a brief introduction of themselves, their spouses and/or their guests including who they were and where they were from.

Vice President John Pewthers asked retirees to provide brief funny stories from their careers with SCS/NRCS.  Many volunteered stories and testimonials to the delight of all of those in attendance.  Everyone was encouraged to bring funny stories to future meetings as this will be an ongoing agenda item at future meetings.
