Oklahoma SCS/NRCS Retirees Newsletter

October 2007

 

The Oklahoma SCS/NRCS Retirees meeting was held in Oklahoma City on October 26, 2007.   Seventy-five retirees and spouses were in attendance.  New officers were elected:  Randy Freeland, President, Stillwater; Stan Rice, Vice-President, Duncan and Sandra Hough, Secretary-Treasurer, Clinton.

 

Bob Bumgarner and Lloyd Garrison retired from the Marlow Watershed Office and are still enjoying their retirement.  Jim McCampbell is President of his local NARFE Chapter and active on a Green Belt and Way Committee in Norman.  He enjoys his grandchildren’s soccer games.  Carl Mackey and his wife have been married 59 years and enjoy grandchildren, great grandchildren, and their First Baptist Church activities.    Bob and Loretta Bourlier have moved back to the family farm in Custer County raising wheat and Angus cattle.  They enjoy RV and fishing. 

 

Lowell and Minnie McMasters retired their RV after 17 years but are still traveling the county and just staying in motels.  They live near Duncan, Oklahoma.  Robert (Bob) Heidlage works part time for the Oklahoma Conservation Commission on Coal Mine Reclamation.  He is the owner of a Thoroughbred horse “Go O State”.  (Nice name!)  Bobby Smith retired in 1992 and spends the bulk of his time in the ministry.  He and Milly have 5 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.  Don Bartolina works part time for the Oklahoma County Conservation District and still assists with the National Land Judging Contest for 4-H and FFA students.  Winnie Jaques provides data entry services to Volunteer Christians Concerned.  Gayle Goforth and Mary stay busy with family activities and have a son still working for NRCS in the same office where Gayle retired. 

 

Erwin Leaverton and his wife live in Edmond and stay busy with their son, daughters and 4 grandchildren.  Kenneth Blan serves on the Economic Development District Board and RC&D Council.  He said he, practices a little law, runs a few cows, and grows a few trees.  Glen and Eunice Mullen recently moved into a Christian retirement community in Bethany, Oklahoma.  Jim Frie and Roberta live in Stillwater and enjoy all OSU sporting activities.  Jim still plays some golf and Roberta enjoys the grandkids.  Otis Bennett lives on Ft. Gibson and plays golf and enjoys his grandkids.

 

Fred Fortney, Les Conner, and Randy Freeland and their wives are big time OSU Cowgirl basketball fans.  They have taken bus trips with other fans to the University of Kansas and Texas A&M games.

 

 

Steve Chessmore, Area Resource Specialist at the Pauls Valley Area Technical Center, has recently retired.  He and his wife, Becky, reside in Purcell and they plan to continue living there.  Steve says he will be helping his wife more and will assist his mother with cutting cedar trees and keeping up the farm where she lives northwest of Stillwater. 

 

Larry Odom, DC at Hollis has retired.  He and Sue will stay at Hollis as they have a daughter and grandchildren there.  Larry helps the grandchildren with showing pigs at the County Fair.

 

Larry Poindexter, Nutrient Management Specialist on the Ecological Science staff in the State Office has also retired.  He and Rowena have moved to Sallisaw to be in the middle of the Eastern Oklahoma lakes to do more fishing.  They have close friends there that they also spend lots of time on mutual interest activities.

 

Former Oklahoma State Conservationist, Roland Willis, and his wife June live near Lake Carl Blackwell west of Stillwater.  He recently converted a pickup bed and camper shell into a deer stand and still enjoys hunting.  Roland said to tell everyone he is still “kicking” but not very high!

 

The next meeting of the Oklahoma group will be in Oklahoma City on April 25, 2008.
